Is More Better? How Much Skincare to Really Use

It’s sometimes hard to gauge how much skincare product to use. You don’t want to use too much or too little. You want that “Goldilocks” amount that’s “just right.” Finding this balance is simple if you understand some general product guidelines.  Most People Use Too Much Product We all tend to over-apply our skincare products without even thinking about it. Maybe we subconsciously think the extra product will give us extra-good skin, but it doesn't work like that. The excess we apply goes to waste, and that's a sad thought when you love top-of-the-line skincare products as much as we do. The Right Amount If you think of how much skincare product to apply in terms of fruit, it’s pretty easy to keep things straight. Imagine the smallest amount as a pomegranate seed. It’s just enough to tap onto your face. The next amount is the size of a blueberry— enough product to spread in an even, thin layer. A cherry represents the amount of product that can be liberally applied all [...]

The Connection Between Self-Care and Dermatology

As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisper, the arrival of September brings more than just a shift in seasons—it marks the start of National Self-Care Month. In a world that often glorifies hustle culture and constant productivity, taking time to care for oneself is essential for maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being. While self-care can encompass a wide range of practices, one often overlooked avenue is dermatology care. This National Self-Care Month, let's explore how dermatology care can be a powerful and transformative form of self-care.  Dermatology care involves nurturing and tending to the largest organ of our body: the skin. Our skin plays a vital role in protecting us from external elements, regulating temperature, and providing a sense of touch. Its health isn't just about appearances; it's deeply intertwined with our overall well-being.  Physical Health and Comfort: Prioritizing dermatology care means addressing skin conditions, maintaining skin health, and preventing potential problems. Regular check-ups with a dermatologist can help identify and treat issues such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancer early on, preventing discomfort and potential complications.  Mental and [...]

Other factors that can contribute to acne include genetics, certain medications, and environmental factors like pollution and humidity. What to Do After Microneedling

Do you want to achieve brighter, smoother skin with long-lasting results? Microneedling triggers healing processes that dramatically improve your skin. This treatment also prepares the skin to absorb serums and other products, making it the ideal time to learn more about medical-grade skincare.  What is Microneedling?  Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a powerful method of skin rejuvenation. It can treat conditions ranging from hyperpigmentation to lines, wrinkles, and acne scars.  Tiny needles create microchannels in the skin, triggering your natural healing process. These microchannels also prepare your skin to receive maximum benefits from skincare products during the healing process.   How Does Microneedling Work? During microneedling, a handheld device uses needles to create microchannels surrounded by healthy skin. The surrounding skin cells immediately initiate a process that brings healthy, vibrant cells to the surface.  Microneedling also signals cells deeper into the skin to produce more collagen and elastin. These proteins give your skin strength, support, and flexibility, but they decline with age. Restoring them can give your skin youthful resilience [...]

What to Do Before a Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Hair removal is tedious and can feel like a waste of valuable time. Put a stop to the annoying cycle with laser hair removal. This treatment can eliminate unwanted hair with long-lasting results. How Does Laser Hair Removal Work? Laser hair removal targets the pigments that give your hair its color. Each hair grows from a hair follicle, a living structure that goes through cycles of resting and growth.  At Laser Skin Care Center, we use the Cynosure Elite MPX laser for hair removal. This dual-wavelength laser treats more hair and skin tones than other lasers with minimal discomfort. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigments in the hair, heating and damaging the follicle.  What to Do Before a Laser Hair Removal Treatment Because laser hair removal targets the roots of your hair, treatment works best if you preserve all your hair roots. Here are a few tips for achieving the best possible results: No Waxing You will need to avoid waxing, plucking, epilating, or any other method that pulls out [...]

Xeomin® vs Botox®: Which Lasts Longer?

Xeomin® vs. Botox® are neurotoxins that work to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Though they work in similar ways, the two treatments have their differences, and your Laser Skin Care Center provider will help you decide which is best for you. What are Neuromodulators? As we age, our skin naturally develops wrinkles and fine lines due to decreased collagen production and all of the facial muscle contractions that have occurred over time. Neuromodulators like Xeomin® and Botox® minimize the appearance of these signs of aging by relaxing the muscles that can cause wrinkles in areas such as the forehead and around the eyes. View More Patient Results *Individual results may vary How Do Xeomin® and Botox® Work? The active ingredient in both Botox® and Xeomin® is the neurotoxin botulinum. When injected underneath the skin, botulinum toxin blocks the nerve signals that are responsible for causing your muscles to contract. Platelets aid your body through the healing process, and plasma is the amber-colored, liquid portion of the blood that acts as a catalyst for red and white blood cells.  To create platelet-rich plasma, a practitioner will draw a blood sample from a patient and place it into a device called a centrifuge that rapidly spins the blood to concentrate the blood with plasma. Dysport® is a popular treatment for deep, dynamic wrinkles, especially the ones in between the eyebrows. However, many people ask, how long does Dysport® last?  What is Dysport®?  Repetitive facial expressions are a part of our daily lives but can cause moderate to severe wrinkles over time. The muscles and the nerves in the face work with each other to allow you to make facial expressions that cause tension and creases within the skin. When Dysport® silences the muscles, the communication stops and relaxes them, which helps to smooth over the appearance of deeper wrinkles.  Dysport® does not cause permanent injury to the muscles or nerves, and its effects wear off over time.  *Individual results may vary What to Expect From Treatment With Dysport®?  Each Dysport® treatment takes around 15 minutes to complete. Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport®: Which one is Right for Me

The neurotoxins, which include Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport®, remain very popular as a successful, no-downtime method for treating difficult expression lines and wrinkles. At Laser Skin Care Center, we offer all three choices, letting us take advantage of each formula’s unique attributes to give you the best results.  View More Patient Results *Individual results may vary What are Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport®? These three treatments fall under the category of neurotoxins. They do not cause any permanent changes to your nerves or muscles. However, they disrupt the signals between muscles and nerves. When injected into the facial muscles, they prevent these muscles from contracting.  The contractions of facial muscles, especially lifelong muscle contractions like smile and frown lines, can cause deep wrinkles and lines in the skin. By quieting the muscles creating these wrinkles, the neurotoxins (Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport®) allow the skin to smooth out and become more relaxed.  Injectables Consultations Available Request A Consultation [...]

What Can Microneedling Treat?

If you want a treatment that can harness your skin’s natural healing properties, you may want to consider microneedling. This popular and effective treatment stimulates the production of collagen and improves cell turnover to keep your skin looking smooth, clear, and youthful.  *Individual results may vary Acne and acne scarring Lines and wrinkles Skin laxity Uneven skin tone Hyperpigmentation Signs of sun damage Large pores Dull or dry skin What is Microneedling? Microneedling uses tiny needles to create areas of micro-damage to the skin. This triggers the surrounding skin cells to release healing signals to jumpstart the healing process. It also triggers the production of collagen, a key protein that gives the skin its youthful support and firmness. The needles penetrate just deep enough to create these powerful regenerative factors in the skin. The tiny channels will start to heal before you even leave the office.  How Does Microneedling Work? The micro-damage caused by microneedling signals the cells to produce collagen. As we age, this vital structural protein decreases in [...]

How Many Sessions for Laser Hair Removal?

For many people, few personal care tasks waste as much time as hair removal. Waxing, shaving, plucking, or epilating can take hours, and hair grows back almost immediately. Laser hair removal can give you hair-free skin that lasts.  *Individual results may vary How Does Laser Hair Removal Work? At Laser Skin Care Center, we use the Cynosure Elite MPX, an advanced multi-laser system that uses a 755nm Alexandrite laser to treat patients with lighter skin, while adding a 1064nm YAG laser lets the same system treat darker-skinned patients. For those in between, the system can even use a combination of the two lasers to achieve the best results for these skin tones.  The laser wavelengths target the melanin pigment that gives hair its color. The root of each hair rests in a hair follicle. When the laser energy contacts the pigment, it creates heat that deactivates the hair follicle and prevents further hair growth.  What are the Benefits of Laser Hair Removal? What Types of Microneedling are Available?

Microneedling has become popular for its ability to provide more even-toned, brighter, smoother skin in a treatment lasting only about half an hour. By creating micro-channels in the skin that trigger the healing process, microneedling stimulates the development of firmer, more youthful-looking skin.  View More Patient Results *Individual results may vary What is Microneedling? At Laser Skin Care Center, we use a microneedling device with twelve sterile micro-needles. These enter the skin to create tiny areas of damage. The skin responds by immediately releasing healing factors that promote new skin growth, healing the tiny channels before you even notice them.  The treatment also triggers the skin to produce more collagen. As the protein that provides structural support and fullness to the skin, collagen can reduce many signs of aging and uneven skin tone. Collagen development can firm and tighten the skin, smooth out lines and wrinkles, and decrease the appearance of acne scars. It can also remove signs of sun damage and leave the skin looking brighter and more [...]

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Tattoo regret happens to many people. Whether your tattoo no longer expresses who you are, or you just do not like having a tattoo anymore, laser tattoo removal can fade or even erase the results of that fateful tattoo decision.  *Individual results may vary How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work? When removing a tattoo, we use a laser that does not harm the skin but passes through and makes contact with the ink pigments in your tattoo. These pigments absorb energy from the laser and break apart into smaller fragments that the body can easily remove. The laser targets the colors in ink pigment, not the skin, and can remove some tattoos in just a few sessions.  Most tattoo pigments have been designed so the body will not remove them. The laser breaks up the pigment particles because the pigments, especially darker ones, absorb this energy, which damages them and causes them to break apart. The body’s lymphatic system will filter out these smaller particles.  How Many Sessions Will [...]

What Causes Psoriasis?

While common, psoriasis causes distress and can hold people back from doing things they want to do. Psoriasis often does not respond to the over-the-counter treatments people try to manage it with. While some people may manage mild cases on their own, all types of psoriasis can benefit from treatment at Laser Skin Care Center. What is Psoriasis? Psoriasis happens when skin cells grow too quickly, producing excessive skin cells that build up on the surface and form scaly, red, irritated plaques. For normal skin, a cell begins its life deep beneath the surface and lives for about a month. In people with psoriasis, this turnover happens in only days.  As a result of all this excess skin growth, skin cells cluster at the surface and form the discolored, flaky plaques characteristic of the condition. These can be painful, inflamed, itchy, or sore. Fortunately, now that scientists understand more about psoriasis, it can be treated more effectively. What Causes Psoriasis? Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system becomes confused [...]

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal works almost anywhere that people grow hair, including the legs, bikini area, chest, back, and arms. At Laser Skin Care Center we use one of the most advanced laser hair removal systems available to give you better results in less time. Get rid of your old, uncomfortable, time-consuming hair removal methods, because laser hair removal will change everything.  *Individual results may vary How Does Laser Hair Removal Work? We use the Cynosure® Elite MPX laser for hair removal treatments. This laser uses multiple wavelengths of light, allowing it to treat more skin tones than almost any other laser available.  The laser targets hair follicles, the small structures in the skin that grow hairs. These follicles contain pigment, and when the laser energy hits this pigment, it creates heat, deactivating the follicle and making sure it doesn’t grow any more hair.  Because hair follicles go through cycles of growing and resting, not all follicles will be growing hairs during a treatment session. Only active follicles contain pigment and [...]

Dysport® VS Xeomin®: What are the Differences?

Dysport® and Xeomin®, two neurotoxins that use the same active ingredient as Botox®, both reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. They do have differences, and your provider will help you choose the right one for you. What are Dysport® and Xeomin®? Our faces develop expression lines as we age, the result of muscles under the skin making it fold and crease. Dysport® and Xeomin® reduce the appearance of these lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the muscles that cause them. Some of our deepest creases, like those on the forehead or between the eyebrows, can disappear with these treatments.  How Do Dysport® and Xeomin® Work? Both of these products use a neurotoxin, botulinum A. When injected, they stop nerves from sending signals to the targeted facial muscles. The muscles do not receive signals to contract, so they stop pulling the skin into wrinkles. Without the tug of the muscles, your skin can relax and the lines and wrinkles will smooth away.  What are the Differences between Dysport® and Xeomin®? The primary difference [...]

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that involves injecting a sclerosing solution into the veins of the legs to target spider veins. It is a minimally invasive procedure, performed by a vascular specialist in about an hour and with minimal discomfort. Sclerotherapy eliminates the need for surgery or other more invasive procedures. What is Sclerotherapy? Sclerotherapy comes from the word for “thickened” or “hard,” and this is what it does to the treated veins when injected by a venous specialist. The treatment causes the veins to harden, thicken, and collapse. Venous specialists use this procedure for cosmetic reasons, such as the bothersome visual appearance of spider veins. They may also use it to treat uncomfortable symptoms like itching, burning, tingling, and pain that these veins can cause.  How Does Sclerotherapy Work? The FDA-approved solution, which only targets the area where it is injected, causes irritation and scarring in the problem spider veins. This blocks blood from flowing through, and it will find healthier veins to travel through while the problem vein collapses. [...]

What is the Difference Between Botox® and Dysport®?

Botox® and Dysport® are injectable treatments for lines and wrinkles on the face. However, they have some differences, and either one may work better than the other for your individual needs.  View More Patient Results *Individual results may vary What is Botox®? Botox® is a neuromuscular toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This toxin has many medical uses, but its primary cosmetic use is for injection into the facial muscles. Botox® relaxes these muscles by blocking the signals from the nerves, keeping them from pulling on the skin.   The most common areas for treatment with Botox® are frown lines on the forehead and between the eyebrows, as well as smile lines around the mouth. In these areas, muscles pull and tug at the skin, creating lines and creases. Botox® allows the skin to relax, letting the lines smooth out. Effects last three to four months.  What is Dysport®? Dysport® targets the lines and wrinkles in the glabellar area between the eyebrows. Wrinkles and creases in this area can [...]

What to Put on Skin After Microneedling

Microneedling and PRP microneedling treatments can reduce signs of aging. Microneedling stimulates your skin’s natural collagen building processes, so incorporating healthy skincare habits after the procedure can make all the difference.  *Individual results may vary Microneedling Overview As an anti-aging treatment, skin rejuvenation treatment, microneedling delivers remarkable results that last for up to six months. Microneedling treatments involve the use of a special device that pokes thin needles into your skin over and over again. In doing so, this creates tiny puncture wounds that alert your skin to a problem. As a result, your skin starts producing more collagen to heal these wounds, essentially boosting your collagen production. Thus, the target area will become firmer, more voluptuous, and radiant.  What [...]

How to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles

Forehead wrinkles are the earliest sign of aging for most of the population. They are usually brought on by repetitive facial expressions, making the skin wrinkle and slowly form deep lines. The more you frown, the deeper your lines will be. How Long Does Sculptra® Last?

As we get older, the natural collagen within our body starts to reduce, and the existing collagen reduces due to toxins and sun exposure. This results in oxidants that damage collagen fibers, cell membranes, and DNA. Skin will sag and wrinkles appear. However, this is not something that you simply need to accept, as Sculptra® can help you to reverse the signs of aging. View More Patient Results *Individual results may vary What is Sculptra®? What are the Benefits of Botox®?

There’s a good reason you’ve already heard about Botox®. This fascinating compound is highly effective at reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles - something that makes it one of the most popular cosmetic interventions in the world.  View More Patient Results *Individual results may vary How Botox® Works Patients of the Laser Skin Care Center are often surprised to find out how Botox® works. It doesn’t “plump” the skin in the traditional sense, or smooth it out by adding material to the dermis. Instead, it relies exclusively on muscle relaxation.  Your complexion comprises multiple layers. First, you have the dermis - a thick barrier of skin cells. And then under that, you have all the blood vessels and nerves supplying it with nutrients and sensations.  Below those, you eventually come to facial muscles - the tissue that allows you to create expressions. As you get older, muscles can become tense and cause the skin on your face to crinkle, creating deep furrows. Botox® works by targeting these muscles, deactivating [...]

If your relatives have lost some of their hair, then it increases the chances that you will too. While hair loss can occur anywhere on the body, it most commonly affects the scalp. Thinning typically appears around the temples first, and then the crown.  The pattern that it takes after that depends on the hereditary factors of the individual. Some patients see circular spots of hair loss around the back of the head, while others lose virtually all their hair on their scalp. Eventually, follicles that produce hair go dormant, leading to balding.  Hair loss, however, [...]

How Often Should You Get Microneedling Treatments?

About Microneedling Microneedling uses a needle-studded device to make tiny micro-injuries to your skin, encouraging it to produce collagen and elastin. The therapy relies on skin cells' response to stress. Damaging the skin puts it into repair mode, increasing the energy cells dedicated to maintenance. This process changes how skin behaves and has the effect of making your complexion appear brighter and more vibrant. *Individual results may vary The procedure is powerful because of its ability to target a broad range of skin ailments. Patients at the Laser Skin Care Center use microneedling to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars.  Traditional microneedling is entirely mechanical. Is Laser Tattoo Removal Permanent?

The ink can never return.  *Individual results may vary About Laser Tattoo Removal Laser tattoo removal is a treatment that gets rid of unwanted tattoos using laser technology. The procedure is entirely non-invasive. A specialist at the Laser Skin Care Center directs a Q-switch laser at your skin, breaking down blobs of tattoo ink into smaller chunks. With sufficient exposure, the particles become small enough for white blood cells to transport to other areas of the body for disposal.  Interestingly, you won’t notice much difference in the appearance of your tattoo immediately following treatment. However, as immune cells clear errant ink particles over the coming days and weeks, the ink will start to fade. At Laser Skin Care Center, our physicians use Fraxel Laser Skin Resurfacing to help patients treat damaged skin, such as sun spots, wrinkles and other signs of aging. Fraxel treatment is a noninvasive skin resurfacing procedure approved by the FDA, and can improve skin health and texture for many patients. Fraxel treatments treat fractions of the skin at a time. During treatment, the laser is used on only a small percentage of the skin and leaves the surrounding area untouched, leading to a much shorter recovery time. The laser is focused on areas below the skin affected by wrinkles, discolorations, or acne scars, encouraging the production of new collagen. The result is healthier, more vibrant skin with less fine lines and wrinkles. In addition, as the treated area begins to heal, new, healthy [...]

How Long Will My Botox Results Last?

Botox is a dermal injectable that targets muscles that causes wrinkles -- forcing them to relax. The result is smoother skin and less visible wrinkles. It is different than other dermal fillers that instead add volume to the face or skin. Botox works by targeting your muscles of expression, relaxing them, and diminishing the appearance of unwanted lines and furrows, produced by age, stress and worry. Most patients see results from Botox approximately 72 hours and up to 7 days after treatment. Botox has long-lasting positive effects for 3-4 months and wears off slowly. Keeping up with injections on a regular basis, before lines and wrinkles reappear, trains the treated muscles to contract less often so that lines appear smoother. Waiting 3-4 months between treatments also ensures the face has a natural appearance and doesn’t look overdone or stretched. Many patients who have never tried Botox before are relieved to hear it is not permanent. Your results also depend on the amount of Botox administered. Those with less noticeable [...]

What are the Differences between UltraShape and Liposuction?

Aging, genetics, and lifestyle can take a toll on the body and add extra volume and fat to areas that used to respond well to diet and exercise. Liposuction and UltraShape are both great ways to contour the body and look slimmer. But what are the differences? Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures and is the gold standard for fat reduction. However, it is surgical and invasive. Liposuction removes fat from your body using a small tube that is inserted through tiny incisions in the skin. Fat is suctioned out under the skin from targeted areas of fat deposits. Liposuction is a very effective form of removing fat deposits in small areas. UltraShape removes fat through ultrasound technology. This procedure shakes the fat cells until they collapse and the destroyed fat cell particles are filtered through the liver and digested through the body naturally over the course of the next few weeks. The results are more natural fat loss and you will not see a drastic change overnight unlike liposuction. Unlike liposuction, UltraShape Power is nonsurgical which [...]

What are the Best Ways to Get Rid of Cellulite?

Cellfina is the first FDA approved procedure for adults designed to improve the appearance of cellulite by treating its structural cause. What is Cellfina?Cellfina is a one-time minimally invasive treatment that works by targeting the structure of cellulite bands that appear in the thighs, flanks, and buttocks. Cellfina has been proven to last up to two years and longer, in some cases. Though it is not a weight loss treatment, Laser Skin Care Center offers a 1 year warranty. If cellulite reappears n the treated area within a year from treatment, we will treat it again for free. How Long Does the Treatment Take? How Should I Prepare For My IPL Photofacial?

Intense Pulsed Light, also known as IPL, Fotofacial or Photofacial, delivers high-intensity pulses of light that penetrate your skin and get rid of brown spots (age spots) caused by sun damage and unwanted spider veins, while stimulating healthy, new collagen. To maximize effectiveness of your IPL photofacial, there are a few things you should do before and after the procedure. It is extremely important that the area being treated is not tanned or exposed to direct sunlight 2 weeks before or Sun exposure encourages the production of melanin, which can interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment by “protecting” the skin by absorbing the light’s energy. Be sure to use SPF even when stepping outside for a brief period. You should also moisturize regularly, and avoid smoking to promote better healing. There are some retinoid antibiotics that may cause skin sensitivity that your doctor may ask you to avoid. Hydration is extremely important for the skin and for recovery. After treatment, most patients experience a few days of redness (similar to a [...]

How Quickly Will I See Results with Kybella?

Kybella® is an FDA-approved injection used to remove submental fat in the chin area, often referred to as a “double chin.” The active ingredient in Kybella® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that helps in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin Kybella® targets fat cells for removal. How Does Kybella Work? When Will I See Results? Kybella® is administered through a series of injections; the total treatment time takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The number of injections you’ll need depends on the severity of the chin fat. Most patients won’t need more than six injections (each spaced one month apart) to see ideal results. This means results are not immediate. It can take 6 months or more to see full results. However, many patients do start to see some results after the second treatment. On the bright side, results, once seen, are long-lasting. Fat cells that are removed will not come back. Trials showed that nearly 80 percent [...]

Get Rid of Stubborn Fat with UltraShape

Looking for a way to get rid of stubborn fat? Are diet and exercise not working like they used to? UltraShape Power is the first and only FDA-cleared, non-invasive body-shaping procedure that uses focused, pulsed ultrasound for selective fat-cell removal. It can be used to contour the thighs, love handles, stomach, arms, bra line, and knees. UltraShape is different than other non-invasive body contouring procedures because it doesn’t use heating or cooling to remove fat. Instead, ultrasonic vibration is used to destroy fat cells. The device shakes the fat cells until the cell walls break apart and release. The body then naturally expels the fat cells. Another bonus of Ultrashape is a feature that ensures cells aren’t targeted more than once, thus minimizing the risk of contouring irregularities. With other body contouring procedures, cosmetic doctors have to eyeball over-treating a section, which could potentially lead to irregular results. UltraShape is not a weight loss solution – it’s best suited for those with a little extra fat to get rid of. It’s not recommended for anyone [...]

How to Reduce Puffy Eyes

Men and women experience age-related bags and puffiness under the eyes due to shifting fat in and around the eye region. This can cause us to appear older, more tired, or sick. Additionally, we lose fat in the cheeks as we age, and the area where the cheek meets under the eye becomes more spread out and many people see a separation between the undereye fat and the cheek fat, causing bags, puffiness, or hollowness. If you want to look as good as you feel, Restylane can help reduce puffiness and bags around the eyes. A symptom of age, lack of sleep, stress, or other environmental factors or lifestyle habits, bagginess around the eyes is treatable. Restylane is a natural dermal filler made with hyaluronic acid that enhances volume under the eyes, reducing bags and helping you appear fresher, more alert, and younger. When injected under the eye and at the top of the cheek, it smooths out the transition between these two areas and gives your face more volume, essentially erasing puffiness and bags. Those [...]

Clear Up Acne Prone Skin with Glycolic Peels

Most people experience acne at some point in their life – usually as a teenager. But for others, acne never really goes away. It can be embarrassing and frustratingly hard to get rid of. The key to healing acne is to open the pores and cleanse the skin of dead cells and acne-causing bacteria. Chemical peels with glycolic acid can help. Glycolic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in sugar cane. When used in skincare products, it offers many rejuvenating and moisturizing benefits to the skin. In its raw state, glycolic acid is a powder made up of colorless crystals that have no scent. Glycolic acid is found in many chemical peels. It’s a safe and effective way to exfoliate and remove the outer layer of the skin. This encourages new skin cell growth and removes dead or damaged cells. Exfoliation and removing dead cells prevents cell build-up on the skin, which causes a dull complexion and clogged pores, leading to acne. Oily and acne-prone skin usually has slower rates of natural exfoliation, making it [...]

Which Juvederm Injection is Right for Me?

Dermal fillers are a great way to plump and volumize the skin, reverse signs of aging, and give the cheeks, lips, or crows feet a rejuvenated appearance. Most facial fillers are made with Hyaluronic acid injectable gel, a substance your body naturally makes. There are many different types of dermal fillers. Juvederm is the number one selling collection of hyaluronic acid fillers in the US. Each product in the Juvederm family of fillers adds volume to a different area of the face to lift cheeks, smooth parentheses lines, or plump the lips. So, which injection is right for you? That depends on what area of the face you wish to treat. Cheeks As we age, our cheeks can lose their volume and begin to sag. Juvederm Voluma XC adds volume to correct age-related volume loss in the cheeks to help create a more youthful appearance. It is the only filler proven to last up to 2 years in the cheek area. How Long is the Recovery Period After an Eyelid Lift?

Often, as we age, the eyelids begin to sag or droop. An eyelid lift can give the face a dramatic overhaul – taking 5 to 10 years off your face without changing the structure or overall appearance. An eyelid lift removes the excess sagging skin to create a more alert and youthful eyelid appearance. Recovery after an eyelid lift can take a few days to a few weeks. Though you will be able to see, immediately after the procedure you will need someone to drive you home. You may experience some swelling, bruising, irritation, dry eyes and discomfort that can be controlled with medication, cold compresses and ointment. Expect minimal, mild discomfort during the immediate recovery period. After surgery, you should apply cold packs, sleep on two pillows, and avoid bending over where your head is below the level of your heart. You should also avoid strenuous activity and things like reading or watching television, which can strain the eyes. If the pain is severe or any abnormal symptoms develop, call the office immediately. [...]

What are the Benefits of Dermal Infusion?

Dermal Infusion is a gentler version of microdermabrasion. It is a skin resurfacing treatment that simultaneously exfoliates and removes dead skin cells, while it applies serums to treat specific skin conditions such as acne, wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, and dry skin. There are many benefits of Dermal Infusion that are not associated with similar procedures, such as microdermabrasion. Dermal Infusion does not irritate the skin as much as traditional, crystal-based dermabrasion treatments, and that it provides serum infusion during treatment. This treatment is superior to others because of the infusion of customized vitamins and topicals that are applied to the skin during the exfoliation process. Your skin gets the benefits of both exfoliation and topical dermal infusion simultaneously. Benefits of Dermal Infusion include: Skin rejuvenation: Dermal Infusion will accelerate skin rejuvenation by promoting healthy cell turnover, removing dead skin and gently resurfacing the skin. Improves complexion: Dermal Infusion treatment will increase blood flow to the skin and promote new skin cells. This creates a healthy, balanced, and radiant complexion. It is used to treat [...]

Will My Botox Results Look Natural?

A lot of women and men shy away from Botox because they’ve seen celebrities or friends who have undergone Botox and now their face barely moves or looks permanently surprised. What they don’t realize is that Botox doesn’t have to cause this – these problems are due to an inexperienced doctor or a patient who insists on too much Botox. To achieve natural Botox, patients should do their homework. Consider credentials and experience. Find a board-certified dermatologist, plastic surgeon or physician assistant. Research the doctor’s previous work. Look at before and after photos of previous patients. How do their results look to you? Check online reviews. Did patients get home and realize they didn’t like their Botox results? Meet the doctor face to face for a consultation. Botox should be highly individualized. Pick a doctor you feel comfortable with. Are they pressuring you to get more Botox than you are comfortable with? Are they listening to your goals and desires? The next step is to create an individualized Botox plan with your doctor – [...]

How Can I Correct My Skin Discoloration Without Lasers?

Many people earn for a bright, even complexion, spending years and many different treatments trying to achieve it. One popular way to remove skin discoloration is through lasers, but those can be costly or cause pigmentation in certain skin tones. How can you correct your skin discoloration without lasers? Lytera has been proven to reduce the appearance of various types of hyperpigmentation in a wide variety of ethnicities and skin types. It also features new technology to impact how the body produces melanin, helping balance melanin production. Why You’re Getting Facial Wrinkles

Most of us accept wrinkles as a part of aging. Though genetics and age do play a role, there are other reasons you may be getting facial wrinkles – either prematurely or more prominently. Sun Exposure Sun exposure can account for up to 70% of skin’s apparent aging. Always wear protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts and sunglasses. Also, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more to protect the skin. Smoking Cigarettes reduce blood supply to the skin. It also triggers the breakdown of collagen and can lead to loose, saggy skin. Pursing your lips to smoke can cause wrinkles in the form of lines above your mouth. Drinking Alcohol dehydrates the body, which leads to puffiness, dry skin, and premature aging. Dehydration can make the skin appear papery and fine wrinkles more apparent. Skip that third glass of wine and opt for water instead to prevent wrinkles. Sugar Diets high in sugar and low in antioxidants lead to poor skin nutrition and have [...]

Ways to Prevent Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are large, bulging veins that can be blue, red, or flesh colored. They are caused by damaged veins, backup of blood, hormone changes, exposure to the sun, injuries, or genetics. Many people, particularly women, begin to suffer from varicose veins later in life.  About 50 to 55 percent of women and 40 to 45 percent of men in the United States suffer from some type of vein problem. Varicose veins affect half of people 50 years and older. How can you prevent varicose veins? Not all varicose and spider veins can be prevented—often they are the result of genetics. There are a few things you can do to reduce your chances of getting new varicose and spider veins and minimize discomfort from existing veins: Exercise and avoid sitting or standing for too long. Moving around decreases pressure on the veins and improves circulation. If you spend all day sitting at a desk, try moving your feet, bending your knees, or stretching your ankles to get the blood flowing. Eat well. Weight gain and [...]

How Does Sclerotherapy Treat Varicose Veins?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that treats varicose veins and spider veins. It involves injecting chemicals into damaged veins. The veins then collapse, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades. In addition to diminishing the appearance of varicose or spider veins, sclerotherapy can also reduce pain or side effects caused by damaged veins. Sclerotherapy can be used to treat varicose and spider veins in the following areas: thighs calves ankles feet face (frequently the sides of the nose) Sclerotherapy can improve related symptoms such as: Aching Swelling Burning Night cramps Depending on the severity and number of veins being treated, the procedure can take 15 minutes to an hour. Other procedures to treat varicose veins include surgical removal of the offending vein, fiberoptic-transmitted laser light and, for very small vessels, intense pulsed-light exposure are also effective. Most doctors recommend trying compression stockings before exploring Sclerotherapy. Sometimes this alone can mitigate varicose veins. Smaller varicose veins and spider veins [...]

Do I Need Earlobe Repair If I’ve Never Worn Gauges in My Ears?

Many women wear earrings and have been doing so since they were children. They are surprised when, decades later, the piercing holes begin to stretch and become elongated. With heavier earrings, this can happen faster than expected. This can even happen if you’ve never worn gauges in your ears. It can also be the result of injury or an accident. When the earlobe is stretched, earrings can slip down and not stay in place, which makes it difficult to wear certain types of earrings. Eventually, the bottom of the piercing holes may wear through completely and the earlobe can split or tear. Earlobe repair can fix earlobe-piercing holes that have been stretched or split. The procedure is quick and easy. Sutures are placed that may be removed in one week and then in a few months, the earlobes can be re-pierced and earrings can be worn again. View Our Before and After Gallery If your earlobes are not damaged but you feel they are too thin, dermal fillers are an excellent option. [...]

How Often Should I Get Checked for Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is extremely common. More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. That’s why it’s so important to get checked for skin cancer. Early detection is second only to prevention when it comes to survival rates. Getting checked regularly is important for everyone, but particularly those with high risks of skin cancer. People with fair skin, who tend to have a hard time tanning and burn easily, and are Caucasian with blue eyes, light hair, and freckles have the highest risk. Skin cancer risk is based on other risk factors, the largest of which is a history of skin cancer either yourself or in your family. Other risk factors include histories of severe sunburn and using tanning beds. People should be checked annually for skin cancer, particularly those at risk. However, you should be performing your own checks several times a year. Patients themselves detect half of all skin cancer [...]

How Can I Remove Acne Scars?

Many people, teenagers and adults suffer from acne. For many, the condition clears up over time. However, others are left with redness and craters in the form of acne scars. Laser Skin Care Center offers Microneedling/Microneedling procedures for those suffering from acne scars. Microneedling /Microneedling Microneedling is a micro-needling system that uses a disposable tip consisting of 12 micro-needles that penetrate the skin, creating micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production. This encourages the body to repair through the skin’s normal physiological process. Penetrating deep into the dermis, the Microneedling creates the growth of elastin and collagen using the body’s own natural healing. It treats tone and texture at a very deep level, including wrinkles and acne scars. This leaves smoother, more even, and flawless skin. Immediately after your Microneedling procedure, you will experience redness, pinpoint bleeding, minimal swelling and you may feel like you have had a mild sunburn. The benefits of one Microneedling procedure will be apparent immediately; however, we recommend 3-6 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results. Before After [...]

Will Laser Hair Removal Work on Dark Skin?

Shaving, waxing, plucking, hair creams, and other hair removal procedures can be a lot of work. But many darker skinned men and women have probably heard that laser hair removal won’t work for them. Laser hair removal can be more challenging for those with darker skin tones – the skin is pigmented and lasers can have trouble targeting the pigment in the hair. However, technology has advanced and many dark-skinned patients have found success with laser hair removal. The Cynosure Elite MPX addresses hair removal on all skin types, including dark skin, for permanent reduction of unwanted body hair. This laser targets and removes cells responsible for hair growth without harming the surrounding skin. Those with darker skin should ask questions of their laser hair removal provider. Darker skin is more prone to burns because it has more melanin. There are lasers available for those who have darker skin tones that detect the contrast between your skin color and hair pigment to remove the hair safely and effectively. If you [...]

How Do Chemical Peels Improve Acne and Acne Scarring?

Acne affects approximately 80% of people at some point in their life – typically as a teenager and young adult. What should be a temporary inconvenience can turn into a lifetime of redness, blotchiness, and scarring, even after the acne itself has faded. When over-the-counter acne skin care products and prescription acne preparations such as Accutane® are not effective in reducing, controlling, or eliminating an individual's acne, a chemical peel could help. During a chemical peel, chemicals are applied to the skin to destroy the outer layers of the skin – the layers damaged by acne. A chemical peel speeds up our body’s natural exfoliation process. Will An Eyelid Lift Really Make Me Look Younger?

An eyelid lift, also known as Blepharoplasty, can enhance the appearance of the eyes. Saggy or drooping eyelids can be an age-defining feature for many people and make us look older than we really are. It is a major reason people consider eyelid surgery to remove the excess sagging skin, to create a more alert and youthful eyelid appearance. Yes, an eyelid lift can really make you look younger! An eyelid lift can make it appear as though you can finally open your eyes fully.  During the procedure, tissue and sagging skin will be removed based on your underlying facial muscle structure, bone structure and the symmetry of your eyebrows. While eyelid surgery will not eliminate other cosmetic issues like dark circles, crow’s feet, or other facial wrinkles, it can make you look refreshed, younger, less tired and more alert. Eye lifts can be performed in conjunction with other procedures such as laser resurfacing, filler injections, or forehead lifts. Though results can be dramatic, they will rejuvenate and freshen the eyes—not change the structure of your eyes. The upper [...]

How Long Will it Take My Double Chin to Go Away After Kybella?

Kybella® is an FDA approved treatment which reduction fat beneath the chin—also known as a double chin. Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella, is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath chin, also known as submental fullness, Kybella targets fat cells for removal. Most patients receive multiple treatment sessions—given at least 1 month apart. In clinical studies, 59% of patients received 6 treatments. Swelling can be significant for the first 48 hours after the procedure. The deoxycholic acid works over time and you should not expect to see results immediately. A month after the procedure, most people have definite reduction in fat tightening of the skin in the treated area.  This continues to improve over the next 3-5 months. Swelling tends to be milder with each subsequent treatment. *Individual results may vary* View Our Before and After Gallery     If you would like to find out more information about Kybella and how long it takes to see results, at our [...]

What is the Difference Between an Upper and Lower Eyelid Lift?

As we get older, our skin can begin to sag and fat deposits can begin to accumulate in places we don’t want them – even around the eyes! This extra skin and fat can make us look tired and older than we really are. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that can take years off your appearance and includes upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid surgery. Upper Eyelid Surgery During upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Extra fat, skin, and muscle is removed or redistributed and the remaining skin is lifted for a more youthful appearance. Upper blepharoplasty leaves a patient looking refreshed. Patients who benefit from this procedure have drooping eyelids. Some patients may even be experiencing vision impairment, which upper blepharoplasty can help treat. Lower Eyelid Surgery During lower eyelid surgery, and incision is made below the lower eyelashes and excess fat, skin, and muscle are removed and redistributed. Patients who benefit from lower blepharoplasty usually have dark bags and circles beneath their eyes, making them appear permanently [...]

What’s the Best Way to Remove Neck Fat and Define the Jawline?

Have you noticed extra skin and fat under your chin or along your neck? According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, submental fullness, also known as a double chin, is an issue that affects nearly 68% of all Americans. You’re not alone! While double chins are common in conjunction with weight gain, they also affect people who are at their ideal weight. A well-defined jaw and slim neckline can shave years off your appearance and make you appear younger and slimmer. There are three great procedures that remove neck fat and define the jawline. Kybella Kybella was approved by the FDA in 2015 and is the only non-surgical way to contour the chin. Kybella is injected into targeted fat areas behind the chin. It works by destroying and absorbing fat cells and preventing future fat accumulation. The body naturally removes the fat. Kybella requires several injections spaced a month apart. What are the Best Options for Non-Invasive Body Contouring?

For a long time, liposuction was the only way to contour the body. An invasive procedure that involves incisions, many people were wary of the scars and recovery time. With advances in technology come many options for non-invasive body contouring. But which ones are the best? UltraShape Power FDA-cleared, UltraShape Power uses focused, pulsed ultrasound for selective fat-cell removal. UltraShape destroys the fat cells in the focal area and increases blood circulation and lymphatic system activity to expedite the clearance of the liquefied fat. Targeting unwanted fat, this procedure reduces fat deposits and body circumference, and improves body shape. The body naturally removes these fat cells over a 2-3 week period and most patients see maximum results about 4 weeks after the procedure. The results are long-lasting. VelaShape Also FDA-cleared, VelaShape is a body shaping treatment that reduces cellulite and reduces the size of the stomach, hips, and thighs. Combining infrared light, radiofrequency energy and vacuum technologies to gently deep heat the fat cells, the surrounding connective tissues and underlying dermal collagen fibers. This stimulates [...]

Over time, after years spent in the sun, its harmful rays start to damage our skin – particularly in sunny Long Beach, California. How Can I Safely Enhance My Lips?

Just as some of us are born with great legs, teeth, or arms, some of us are born with great lips. Others lament the size and shape of their lips – and unfortunately there are no exercises or braces to help change them! Additionally, as we age, our lips tend to thin, lose shape, and show signs of aging. Fortunately, there are several safe and effective injectables that can enhance and improve the size and shape of your lips. Restylane Silk FDA-approved for lip augmentation and smoothing of wrinkles around the mouth, Restylane Silk provides natural looking results for lip enhancement and wrinkle repair. Made of smaller and smoother particles than some other lip injectables, Restylane Silk uses a tiny needle, which offers improved patient comfort and natural, subtle results. Most patients see visible lip fullness for up to 6 months after injection. How Often Should I Have My Skin Checked for Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer and yet most of us lay out in the sun all summer and rarely get our skin checked. Each year, more than a million people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer and 62,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma. Skin cancer is cured most easily at its earliest stage, which is why screenings are so important. Screenings typically take about 15 minutes where a dermatologist will inspect any suspicious moles. There are several warning signs, conveniently labeled the ABCDE’s, that a mole may be pre-cancerous. If the mole is: Asymmetrical Border – has a uneven border Color – is several different shades of colors Diameter – large in size Evolving – changing in any way It is recommended to have your skin checked for skin cancer every 6 months to 1 year. However, you should do your own skin checks at home, particularly after spending time in the sun, to see if any moles are changing or growing in size. If you have a history of precancerous lesions [...]

Will Sun Exposure Ruin My Cosmetic Procedure Results?

You’ve just scheduled a cosmetic procedure designed to improve your complexion – and you couldn’t be happier!  You can’t wait to show off your newfound results to all your friends and family members.  In fact, your mind is swimming with images of your gorgeous glow at parties, barbeques, and beachside bonfires. But before you undergo your cosmetic procedure, consider this – unless you protect your sensitive skin from sun exposure, you could end up stunting or even reversing results from your treatment. Many cosmetic procedures that utilize lasers, ultrasound energy, or even injectables can cause the skin to become more sensitive.  For example, take laser skin resurfacing: depending on the type of technology you’re using, the procedure either removes top layers of skin or creates micro-channels within the skin to prompt collagen production.  Either way, your facial skin is going to be extremely sensitive to pigmentation after this procedure. If you expose yourself to sunlight without sunscreen protection, you’re making it much more likely that your newly sensitive skin will become pigmented and discolored.  That’s why it’s always recommended that [...]

How Long Do Hand Rejuvenation Procedures Last?

When it comes to keeping yourself looking younger and more refreshed, you probably focus on treating your face and neck.  After all, these areas are all highly targeted by the beauty industry, with loads of anti-wrinkle face and neck creams filling up the shelves at your favorite beauty department. But have you ever stopped to think that your hands are giving away your real age? Think about it this way: your hands are covered in the same delicate and thin skin tissue as your face and neck.  They also partake in plenty of repetitive actions, depending on your occupation.  Add to the fact that your hands lose valuable volume over time, and it’s no wonder the hands are often dead giveaways for a person’s real age. Don’t let your hands reveal your secrets.  Hand rejuvenation at the Laser Skin Care Center in Long Beach, CA can help make your hands look as young and vibrant as you feel! So how does hand rejuvenation work?  Simple: by using the same fillers that are injected into the face to add temporary, youth-enhancing [...]

What Is VelaShape and How Is It Different From UltraShape Power?

When it comes to non-invasive body contouring, it seems as though there are endless options available on the market today.  Each body contouring treatment promises inch loss, but they take very different approaches in order to achieve those results.  How do these body contouring treatments work, and how are they so different from one another? To help understand, let’s take a look at two popular non-invasive body contouring procedures: VelaShape and UltraShape Power. VelaShape combines the power of radiofrequency energy with vacuum technology to heat and destroys fat cells underneath the dermis.  In addition to destroying fat cells, radiofrequency helps to heat and trigger collagen production for younger, tighter-looking skin.  By combining these two effects, VelaShape helps to eliminate the appearance of cellulite and promote inch loss around the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and waistline. UltraShape Power uses ultrasound energy to heat and liquefies those same fat cells.  UltraShape Power delivers a bigger punch (clinical trials have shown that it reduces fat cells by up to 32%); however, it’s not as effective at eliminating the appearance of cellulite as VelaShape.  Therefore, [...]

Exercise and Cellfina: What Do You Need to Know?

If you’re using diet and exercise to treat the appearance of cellulite, you may notice that those stubborn dimples just aren’t responding the way you hoped they would.  Unfortunately, cellulite can be stubborn that way, as it won’t necessarily respond to weight loss.  As cellulite is caused by collagen bands that push fat deposits up against the skin, this means that diet and exercise alone won’t cure the problem. That’s why Cellfina is such an excellent solution to cellulite.  It works to correct the source of the problem by breaking up those bands that create the dreaded dimpling associated with cellulite.  Once these bands are broken up, pressure on the fat is released, causing an almost immediate reduction in dimpling. One thing that’s important to note – especially if you enjoy following an exercise regimen – is that it’s best to avoid strenuous exercise immediately after your Cellfina treatment.  Doctors recommend that you wait at least one to two weeks before resuming your favorite exercise regimen, especially if it’s strenuous (like running, spinning, rowing, etc.).  These recommendations are made because [...]

Best Cosmetic Procedure to Get Done Before a Wedding?

To say you’re thrilled for your upcoming nuptials would be a significant understatement. You can’t wait for that moment where you’re walking down the aisle toward your loved one, ready to start a brand-new life together. All eyes will be on you… And that’s why you want to look your absolute best for your big day! But before you start making appointments for cosmetic procedures, keep this in mind – many procedures should be timed in such a way where you still won’t be recovering from your treatment. For example, many laser resurfacing treatments require a couple of weeks’ recovery for side effects to dissipate. Even dermal fillers and Botox can lead to side effects like bruising, swelling, and slight bleeding. In other words, if you leave these cosmetic treatments until the last minute, there’s a good chance your wedding photographs will have evidence of your cosmetic work! The best cosmetic procedure to get done before a wedding is a superficial treatment, like a facial or mild dermabrasion. These can safely be performed a few weeks before [...]

What is Psoriasis? Can It Be Cured?

If you have psoriasis, then it’s likely that you’ve felt as though this skin condition dominates a lot of your thinking.  Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition with unknown causes; however, researchers believe that psoriasis can be genetic.  Whatever the cause of psoriasis, there’s no known cure, which means that people with this skin condition need treatments that manage symptoms. Since psoriasis is an immune-related disorder, it commonly flares up as a result of stress, illness, or infection.  Psoriasis often appears as scaly, itchy, and red patches of skin on the scalp, neck, arms, elbows, knees, and back.  These patches can be so dry that they appear to burn or crack, which can be painful.  Some outbreaks of psoriasis take weeks or months to dissipate; some cases of psoriasis can take years to disappear. If you suffer from psoriasis, Laser Skin Care Center in Long Beach, CA is pleased to offer a treatment that helps with long-term management of symptoms.  Xtrac for Psoriasis is a laser light treatment that targets patches of lesions; the light helps to clear up the [...]

Why Mohs Surgery Recovery Matters

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month - and for many individuals, that means making an appointment with a dermatologist to examine any unusual lesions or moles that might have appeared or changed shape.  Based on this examination, your dermatologist may decide to biopsy a mole or lesion to determine if it’s a tumor. At Laser Skin Care Center in Long Beach, CA, we use the Mohs surgical method to remove skin tumors.  This surgical procedure is different from traditional excision in that it removes less overall skin tissue from the extraction site.  Doing so helps minimize any scars, which is particularly important for lesions that are removed on visible areas of the body (such as the face).  The Mohs surgical method also removes a greater amount of the tumor from the skin, ensuring the most successful outcome. Mohs surgery requires a specific recovery process, so it’s important to follow these steps immediately after your surgery: For the first 48 hours, avoid any strenuous activity that could raise your blood pressure. It’s also recommended that you take this time off of [...]

Why You Need an Annual Skin Cancer Screening

Did you know that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month? With over 3.5 million diagnoses per year, skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States alone.  Fortunately, skin cancer is also preventable and, when detected early, highly treatable.  That’s why it’s vital for everyone to undergo annual skin cancer screenings at their local dermatologist. This reasoning is especially true in California, where sunshine and outdoor activity go hand-in-hand.  Even the most diligent sunscreen routine could lapse in the face of a lazy day on the beach or drinks at an outdoor patio.  Every case of unprotected exposure to the sun ups your odds of getting skin cancer, which is why annual screenings are so vital to protecting your health. Want a few other reasons why you should be diligent about getting an annual skin cancer screening?  Take a look: It can be pretty easy to see if a mole or patch of skin has changed color or shape on noticeable parts of your body. But what about hard-to-see places, like the back of your [...]

When Should I Throw Away Old Cosmetic Products?

Did you know that June is National Safety Month?  That’s right – National Safety Month is dedicated to helping people learn how to curb behaviors and habits that can lead to health problems.  While many organizations are focused on improving habits at work, on the road, and in the home, here at Laser Skin Care Center we think it’s worth emphasizing safety in your cosmetics bag. It may seem trivial, but old make-up can lead to significant healthcare concerns.  From eye makeup that causes infections to bacteria that can be passed through old lipstick, here’s a definitive timeline of when you should throw away old cosmetic products: Mascara: You should definitely throw away your mascara every three months, as bacteria quickly builds up on this staple cosmetic product.  Ultimately you should be replacing your mascara up to four times per year. Eyeshadow and Eyeliner:  Eyeshadow should be thrown away after two years (sooner if you use eyeshadow every day), while eyeliner should be thrown away between three to six months.  The only exception to this rule is if your eyeshadow is [...]

How Long Does It Take to Recover From a Cellfina Treatment?

Cellulite can be a burden for many women; in fact, it’s estimated that up to 98% of women have some form of cellulite on their legs and buttocks.  The dimpling associated with cellulite can make it difficult for women to feel confident about their appearance. If the appearance of cellulite has always bothered you, it’s time to discover a new FDA-approved treatment that’s proven to minimize those annoying dimples…Cellfina! Introducing Cellfina For Cellulite Cellfina is an innovative new treatment that uses the power of microneedling to break up collagen bands underneath the skin.  These collagen bands push excess fat up to the surface of the skin, which results in the dimpling appearance that’s so common with cellulite. When these bands are broken up, fat is no longer pushed up to the skin – and that results in the disappearance of cellulite! Cellfina is so effective that results can for more than two years. What’s the Recovery Like? Cellfina is minimally invasive, making this a great treatment option for busy patients who want to see significant reductions in their cellulite. [...]

Is UltraShape Power As Effective As Liposuction?

Are fat rolls still clinging to your body, despite the fact that you eat a healthy diet and get plenty of exercises?  Looking for a solution that can help contour your body and blast away those stubborn fat cells? Fortunately, there are plenty of surgical and non-surgical options out there to help patients who are frustrated with fat deposits that just won’t go away.  But when it comes down to it, which option is better at getting rid of fat: Non-surgical options – like UltraShape Power – or surgical options, like traditional liposuction? First, UltraShape! Before we can explore which option is most effective, it’s important to examine just what UltraShape is, and how it can help target stubborn body fat. UltraShape Power is an FDA-approved non-surgical approach to eliminate fat, leading to approximately 1-2 inches loss around the waistline. UltraShape Power is a great option for clients who are looking for inch loss without surgery.  Additionally, UltraShape has virtually no downtime, with slight side effects. Now Liposuction! Surgical liposuction is still one of the best options for patients who need [...]

Cellfina: Are Results Permanent?

California is home to a never-ending summer – and that means you can wear shorts, dresses, and other revealing clothing all year round. But for individuals who have cellulite dimpling that just won’t respond to diet or exercise, this never-ending summer might seem far too long. If you are ready to get rid unsightly cellulite dimpling on the legs and buttocks then it’s time to introduce yourself to Cellfina at the Laser Skin Care Center in Long Beach, California! What Is Cellfina? Cellfina is an FDA-approved treatment designed to reduce the appearance of common symptoms of cellulite, including dimpling.  Despite the fact that 98% (percentage seems high-- maybe say "a majority") of women have cellulite, many patients feel uncomfortable and self-conscious wearing shorts, bathing suits or shorts skirts (not tank tops) or any other clothing that might reveal dimpling Cellfina uses microneedling technology to break up the collagen bands that contribute to significant dimpling.  Much like an elastic, these bands snap when the pressure is relieved – and that relief immediately reduces the appearance of cellulite. Are Results Permanent? Cellfina [...]

Kybella or Chin Lipo: Which Should I Choose?

It seems to be a tale as old as time: No matter how hard you work out or how clean you eat, the fat tissue underneath your chin refuses to bulge.  In fact, it’s making it tough for you to show off all your hard work, simply because that double chin makes you seem like you’re carrying excessive weight. Excess submental fat – otherwise known as a double chin – happens for a variety of reasons.  One of the most obvious is weight gain; however, some people are genetically prone to developing excess submental fat.  To make matters worse, this area can be notoriously difficult to treat, as facial fat is typically lost as a result of larger weight loss. For people struggling to lose their chin fat, there are two fantastic options available at Laser Skin Care Center in Long Beach, CA – Kybella and chin liposuction.  Both treatments have been shown to significantly reduce excess underchin fat.  Both can lead to permanent results with proper diet and exercise. But when it comes down to it, which treatment is [...]

Will Cellfina Work on the Front of the Legs?

It may be autumn again, but that doesn’t mean cellulite isn’t still on your mind.  After all, the holiday months are coming up – and that means spending your evenings in dresses, wanting to look your very best.  Plus, there are still several good beach days left, which means you’re still feeling self-conscious about how your thighs appear in shorts or a bathing suit. Fortunately, there’s Cellfina, a brand-new FDA-cleared treatment designed to target and treat the dimpled appearance common with cellulite.  Cellfina uses a patented microneedling technology to break up the connective bands underneath the skin.  Much like a rubber band snaps when tension is released, so too do these bands break apart and release the tension that contributes to dimpling.  As a result, cellulite appears smoother, with results lasting up to two years. In fact, in clinical studies, Cellfina patient satisfaction is 94% at 1 year and 96% at two years. Most patients only need one Cellfina treatment to see significant results.  Treatments are fast, with minimal side effects; most patients can drive themselves home afterwards. Cellfina treatments [...]

Playing Safe with Baby Skin Care

As a new mother, I am keen to select skin care products for my child that are free of potentially harmful toxins. Formaldehyde, parabens, phthalates, and 1,4-dioxane are among the top offenders.   These chemicals may not be listed by name among the ingredients.   For instance, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can be released by other chemicals such as quarternium-15, a widely used preservative in skin care products.   Paraben is another commonly used preservative in shampoos and moisturizers, and its estrogen-mimicking properties have caused some to suggest a potential association with breast cancer, though no direct causal link has been established.  Among a small percentage of allergic patients, parabens can cause a contact dermatitis or skin irritation. Phthalates are chemical plasticizers that are used to enhance absorption of lotions and to stabilize fragrances. Since the ingredients in scents are considered proprietary information, the term fragrance may actually contain phthalates. Phahlates are known endocrine disruptors and linked to a potential increased risk of breast cancer, early puberty, and reproductive birth defects.  The jury is still out on just how dangerous phthalates are, [...]

Having beautiful skin is often the first impression

Having beautiful skin is often the first impression one can give about lifestyle, outlook, and even personality. When your skin looks amazing, you can often feel amazing.  To a certain degree, how great your skin looks now is based upon winning the "genetic lottery" and inheriting great features.  Despite this, we can all improve and strive to look our best given what we have.  Given the current state of medical technology, we are lucky to have at our disposal the ability to customize a skin care regimen and try low-risk, elective procedures to optimize our look and improve the appearance of our skin.
