Xeomin® vs. Botox® are neurotoxins that work to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Though they work in similar ways, the two treatments have their differences, and your Laser Skin Care Center provider will help you decide which is best for you.

What are Neuromodulators?

As we age, our skin naturally develops wrinkles and fine lines due to decreased collagen production and all of the facial muscle contractions that have occurred over time. Neuromodulators like Xeomin® and Botox® minimize the appearance of these signs of aging by relaxing the muscles that can cause wrinkles in areas such as the forehead and around the eyes.

How Do Xeomin® and Botox® Work?

The active ingredient in both Botox® and Xeomin® is the neurotoxin botulinum. When injected underneath the skin, botulinum toxin blocks the nerve signals that are responsible for causing your muscles to contract. Without these signals, your muscles relax, reducing tension on the skin and allowing wrinkles to smooth away.

What are the Differences between Xeomin® and Botox®?

The main difference between Xeomin® and Botox® is that Xeomin® consists only of the botulinum neurotoxin, so it is considered a “naked” version of the injectable, while Botox® contains additional proteins and ingredients in its formulation. The additional ingredients in Botox® can possibly form antibodies that may render the treatment ineffective after repeated treatments. Some people may find that one formula is more effective for them than another.

Which Lasts Longer, Xeomin® or Botox®?

Both Xeomin® and Botox® are temporary treatments; you can expect your results to last anywhere from three to six months. There is no substantial evidence to suggest that one treatment lasts significantly longer than the other. However, in some studies, patients reported longer-lasting effects with Xeomin®. You may find that one brand of neuromodulator works better for you than another.

Is There Any Downtime with Xeomin® or Botox®?

Xeomin® or Botox® are both minimally invasive procedures that require no downtime. After your quick Xeomin® or Botox® treatment, you are free to return to your day. Patients will typically experience bruising and swelling on/around the injection site, which should subside within a day or two.

Your Laser Skin Care Center provider will give you specific recovery instructions that may include avoiding laying down for four hours after your procedure and not touching or rubbing the injection site for 24 hours.

Am I a Good Candidate for Xeomin® or Botox®?

Anyone who has unwanted wrinkles on their face may be a good candidate for Xeomin® or Botox®. The ideal candidate should be in good health and have realistic expectations about their results. Your Laser Skin Care Center provider will work with you to determine which neurotoxin is right for you.
