Before Botox®, surgery was the only way to treat expression lines and wrinkles. Today, you can choose between the original Botox® and several other neuromodulators, including Xeomin®. This new treatment works in a similar way but may have some advantages depending on your needs.

What are Xeomin® and Botox®?

Xeomin® and Botox® are types of neuromodulators. They both use a compound called botulinum toxin to do their work. This compound acts on your facial nerves, limiting their signals to your facial muscles. As a result, muscles stop pulling on the skin and your wrinkles can relax.

Xeomin® and Botox® are generally used to treat the same lines and wrinkles, including horizontal forehead lines, vertical creases between the brows, and crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes. Treating the facial muscles that cause these lines allows the rest of your face to move naturally.

Is Xeomin® Better Than Botox®?

The primary difference between Xeomin® and Botox® is the accessory proteins they use. Botox® combines botulinum toxin with a protein that helps it reach and attach to the targeted nerves. Xeomin® is often referred to as the “naked” neuromodulator because it does not include these proteins. While both are equally effective, the proteins in Botox® can potentially attract the attention of your immune system, stopping it from working.

Both treatments usually last three to six months and provide comparable results. We recommend speaking to your Laser Skin Care Center aesthetician about which option may work better for you. Both treatments will provide the desired results for most people

Is There Any Downtime With Xeomin® or Botox®?

Your Xeomin® or Botox® injections can take as little as fifteen minutes. You can return to your usual activities immediately with no downtime. However, avoid rubbing your face for the next several hours. You may notice minor redness, bruising, or swelling that fades within a few days.

Am I a Good Candidate for Xeomin® or Botox®?

Most healthy adults can receive either of these treatments. Good candidates for Xeomin® or Botox® want to prevent or address lines and wrinkles. Candidates should have reasonable expectations and goals. You should not have injections if you have an active skin condition or infection in the treatment area.
