What are Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport®?
These three treatments fall under the category of neurotoxins. They do not cause any permanent changes to your nerves or muscles. However, they disrupt the signals between muscles and nerves. When injected into the facial muscles, they prevent these muscles from contracting.
The contractions of facial muscles, especially lifelong muscle contractions like smile and frown lines, can cause deep wrinkles and lines in the skin. By quieting the muscles creating these wrinkles, the neurotoxins (Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport®) allow the skin to smooth out and become more relaxed.
Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport®: Which one is Right for Me?
All three products contain botulinum toxin A, the active ingredient that produces the temporary muscle silencing effect. Subtle differences in their formulas can result in slightly different properties, and experienced providers know which ones may produce the best results for each individual.
Sometimes referred to as “naked”, Xeomin® contains only botulinum A without any associated proteins. This makes the particles smaller. Botox® and Dysport® contain the same toxin but are packaged in a complex of support proteins which make the particles larger. This can affect how they spread out under the skin. As a result, these products may work better in different areas of the face, such as lines between the eyebrows or around the eyes.
People also see a difference between the products and how long it takes to see results. Xeomin® takes about four days for results to appear, as opposed to three days with Botox® and one day with Dysport®. Providers also find that some people do not respond as well to one product after using it for a while and may respond better if switched to another product.
Is There Any Downtime with These Treatments?
Any of these products make the perfect lunchtime treatment since people can receive their injections and return to their daily routine immediately. Some people may notice a bit of swelling in the area of the injections for a few hours afterward.
Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport®?
Most people are good candidates for Botox®, Xeomin®, or Dysport®. However, if you have ever had a reaction to any one of them, you may not be a good candidate for the others. Discuss any medical conditions you have during your consultation.
