A chemical peel is one of the most effective, customizable ways to improve your skin. The variety of chemical peels means that almost anyone can benefit from them. Chemical peels break up layers of dead and damaged skin cells to reveal young, healthy cells underneath.
What is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel or facial peel is a treatment that uses a chemical, often an acid, to break the bonds that hold the layers of dead skin cells together. This process is called chemical exfoliation. The number of layers removed depends on the strength of the peel. By removing layers of damage, chemical peels reveal skin that looks clearer, smoother, and more even-toned.
What Can Chemical Peels Treat?
Chemical peels can treat facial concerns ranging from pigmentation issues to signs of aging. Conditions that can benefit from a chemical peel include:
-
- Hyperpigmentation
- Uneven skin tone
- Roughness
- Dryness or dullness
- Lines and wrinkles
- Acne and acne scars
- Sun damage
What Types of Chemical Peels are Available?
At Laser Skin Care Center, we can choose from a wide range of facial peels to address your skincare needs. We will also make sure the type of peel fits into your lifestyle, how much downtime you can take, and how often you want to have maintenance treatments.
Light Peel
Light chemical peels are used to brighten, smooth, and soften the skin. You can have one of these peels every four to six weeks until you achieve your desired results, then as often as needed to maintain them. They are gentle and suitable for most skin types, including acne-prone skin.
Medium Peel
Medium peels can treat light acne scarring, fine lines, and pigmentation issues. Because more layers of skin are peeled off, it takes longer to heal between treatments. We recommend this treatment every three to six months until you see your desired results. A medium peel usually requires fewer treatments than a light one.
Deep Peel
A deep peel or phenol peel can treat significant signs of aging, including wrinkles, skin laxity, and pre-cancerous growths. This type of peel is intensive to address severe skin concerns, and you will only need it once. Downtime is longer, but results are dramatic and long-lasting.
Is There Any Downtime With a Chemical Peel?
A light chemical peel may have little to no downtime. Some people may have some redness lasting a few hours to a day. If you have a medium peel, you can expect some redness and peeling that lasts a few days. After a deep peel, redness and peeling can last a week or more. Your skin will be extremely sun-sensitive after a chemical peel, so avoid exposure and use quality sun protection.
