Dysport® and Xeomin®, two neurotoxins that use the same active ingredient as Botox®, both reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. They do have differences, and your provider will help you choose the right one for you.

What are Dysport® and Xeomin®?

Our faces develop expression lines as we age, the result of muscles under the skin making it fold and crease. Dysport® and Xeomin® reduce the appearance of these lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the muscles that cause them. Some of our deepest creases, like those on the forehead or between the eyebrows, can disappear with these treatments.

How Do Dysport® and Xeomin® Work?

Both of these products use a neurotoxin, botulinum A. When injected, they stop nerves from sending signals to the targeted facial muscles. The muscles do not receive signals to contract, so they stop pulling the skin into wrinkles. Without the tug of the muscles, your skin can relax and the lines and wrinkles will smooth away.

What are the Differences between Dysport® and Xeomin®?

The primary difference between these two: Xeomin® contains only one ingredient, the botulinum toxin itself. Dysport® contains the same ingredient, but as part of a compound that affects the way it acts in the body. The body may be less likely to become resistant to the “naked” toxin in Xeomin® than to the more complex version in Dysport®.

Dysport® is FDA-approved for moderate to severe glabellar (between the eyebrows) lines and forehead lines. Xeomin® is FDA-approved to treat a similar area, but specifically the deep wrinkles between the eyebrows. Dysport® has a formula that allows it to spread out, so it works better for covering a somewhat larger treatment area.

You will see results from Dysport® within 24 hours of your treatment. You will not see results from Xeomin® for about four days. However, Xeomin® often lasts longer than Dysport®, with the first lasting up to a month or longer than the second.

The one-ingredient formula of Xeomin® makes it especially effective for people who have become resistant to the ingredients in other forms of botulinum toxin and do not respond as well as they used to. These people may achieve their desired results again with Xeomin®.
