What is Botox®?
Botox® is a neuromuscular toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This toxin has many medical uses, but its primary cosmetic use is for injection into the facial muscles. Botox® relaxes these muscles by blocking the signals from the nerves, keeping them from pulling on the skin.
The most common areas for treatment with Botox® are frown lines on the forehead and between the eyebrows, as well as smile lines around the mouth. In these areas, muscles pull and tug at the skin, creating lines and creases. Botox® allows the skin to relax, letting the lines smooth out. Effects last three to four months.
What is Dysport®?
Dysport® targets the lines and wrinkles in the glabellar area between the eyebrows. Wrinkles and creases in this area can be deep and hard to treat, but Dysport® is approved to treat these lines.
Dysport® is also a type of botulinum toxin. However, because they differ in some important trace substances, one may work better than the other. It also works by preventing nerves from telling the muscles to contract. Results last up to five months.
Should I Get Botox® or Dysport®?
Since Botox® and Dysport® work in the same way, which one works better for you depends on how your body responds to them. Both have been tested and proven extremely safe.
If you are getting treatment for lines around your mouth, your provider may recommend Botox® since it has been approved for this area. However, both Botox® and Dysport® have been approved for the area between the eyebrows.
Only your provider can determine which of these two treatments best meets your individual needs and works best with your body’s response. The professionals at the Laser Skin Care Center have years of experience using both of these products and will make sure to use the right one for you.
Botox® and Dysport® can be used alongside dermal fillers, which provide an additional lifting and plumping effect. The combination smooths wrinkles and adds volume to the face at the same time.
Is There Any Downtime?
You may have some redness, swelling, or soreness in the treated area, but this should go away quickly. You can return to work or other activities but avoid sun exposure.
Am I a Candidate for Botox® or Dysport®?
If you have wrinkles around your mouth, on your forehead, or between your eyebrows, these two products both offer an option to temporarily remove them. Both have excellent safety records and both act on the muscles by blocking nerve signals. Most people can use Botox® or Dysport®.
