What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer forms when different types of skin cells develop mutations that let them grow abnormally. Its appearance can vary depending on the type. Most types of skin cancer grow slowly but can damage other structures as they grow. Other types can spread to other areas if not treated promptly. Fortunately, early detection allows the safe, complete removal of most skin cancers.

What are the Warning Signs of Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer can look very different depending on the person and area of the body. All strange-looking or newly appearing spots or lesions should be checked by a dermatologist. Knowing the warning signs helps you know when something should be examined.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

This type of skin cancer can look like a firm, raised, red bump, a scaly area, or a sore that goes away and reopens. While slow-growing, it can damage surrounding tissues and eventually spread if untreated.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

The most common type of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, can look like a pearly or flesh-colored bump. It may also look like an unusually pink area of skin. This type of skin cancer can become damaging if not treated.

Melanoma

Melanoma forms from out-of-control melanocytes. These cells produce pigment in your skin, so melanoma usually begins as a mole. Moles that grow or change quickly should be checked as soon as possible. Other signs include uneven borders, multiple or changing colors, and larger sizes. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer but is entirely treatable if caught in its early stages.

How Can I Prevent Skin Cancer?

The primary cause of skin cancer is DNA damage caused by ultraviolet light. Sun exposure breaks cellular DNA, making cancer-causing mutations more likely. Most skin cancers occur in sun-exposed areas. Wear sun protection and avoid excessive exposure at all times. You can also decrease your risk of cancer by leading a healthy lifestyle and getting a yearly skin cancer screening by a dermatologist or other skin specialist.
