What is Psoriasis? Can It Be Cured?

If you have psoriasis, then it’s likely that you’ve felt as though this skin condition dominates a lot of your thinking.  Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition with unknown causes; however, researchers believe that psoriasis can be genetic.  Whatever the cause of psoriasis, there’s no known cure, which means that people with this skin condition need treatments that manage symptoms. Since psoriasis is an immune-related disorder, it commonly flares up as a result of stress, illness, or infection.  Psoriasis often appears as scaly, itchy, and red patches of skin on the scalp, neck, arms, elbows, knees, and back.  These patches can be so dry that they appear to burn or crack, which can be painful.  Some outbreaks of psoriasis take weeks or months to dissipate; some cases of psoriasis can take years to disappear. If you suffer from psoriasis, Laser Skin Care Center in Long Beach, CA is pleased to offer a treatment that helps with long-term management of symptoms.  Xtrac for Psoriasis is a laser light treatment that targets patches of lesions; the light helps to clear up the [...]

Why Mohs Surgery Recovery Matters

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month - and for many individuals, that means making an appointment with a dermatologist to examine any unusual lesions or moles that might have appeared or changed shape.  Based on this examination, your dermatologist may decide to biopsy a mole or lesion to determine if it’s a tumor. At Laser Skin Care Center in Long Beach, CA, we use the Mohs surgical method to remove skin tumors.  This surgical procedure is different from traditional excision in that it removes less overall skin tissue from the extraction site.  Doing so helps minimize any scars, which is particularly important for lesions that are removed on visible areas of the body (such as the face).  The Mohs surgical method also removes a greater amount of the tumor from the skin, ensuring the most successful outcome. Mohs surgery requires a specific recovery process, so it’s important to follow these steps immediately after your surgery: For the first 48 hours, avoid any strenuous activity that could raise your blood pressure. It’s also recommended that you take this time off of [...]

Why You Need an Annual Skin Cancer Screening

Did you know that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month? With over 3.5 million diagnoses per year, skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States alone.  Fortunately, skin cancer is also preventable and, when detected early, highly treatable.  That’s why it’s vital for everyone to undergo annual skin cancer screenings at their local dermatologist. This reasoning is especially true in California, where sunshine and outdoor activity go hand-in-hand.  Even the most diligent sunscreen routine could lapse in the face of a lazy day on the beach or drinks at an outdoor patio.  Every case of unprotected exposure to the sun ups your odds of getting skin cancer, which is why annual screenings are so vital to protecting your health. Want a few other reasons why you should be diligent about getting an annual skin cancer screening?  Take a look: It can be pretty easy to see if a mole or patch of skin has changed color or shape on noticeable parts of your body. But what about hard-to-see places, like the back of your [...]

When Should I Throw Away Old Cosmetic Products?

Did you know that June is National Safety Month?  That’s right – National Safety Month is dedicated to helping people learn how to curb behaviors and habits that can lead to health problems.  While many organizations are focused on improving habits at work, on the road, and in the home, here at Laser Skin Care Center we think it’s worth emphasizing safety in your cosmetics bag. It may seem trivial, but old make-up can lead to significant healthcare concerns.  From eye makeup that causes infections to bacteria that can be passed through old lipstick, here’s a definitive timeline of when you should throw away old cosmetic products: Mascara: You should definitely throw away your mascara every three months, as bacteria quickly builds up on this staple cosmetic product.  Ultimately you should be replacing your mascara up to four times per year. Eyeshadow and Eyeliner:  Eyeshadow should be thrown away after two years (sooner if you use eyeshadow every day), while eyeliner should be thrown away between three to six months.  The only exception to this rule is if your eyeshadow is [...]
